Democrats Officially Nominate Joe Biden as Their Presidential Candidate
U.S. Democrats officially nominated former Vice President Joe Biden Tuesday to be their candidate in the November presidential election on another evening in which prominent Republicans joined with Democrats in criticizing President Donald Trump while praising Biden’s leadership skills. Biden had been the party’s presumptive nominee for months after outlasting a crowded field of Democratic presidential hopefuls in state-by-state primary and caucus votes, including his closest rival, Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Denying, distracting, and demeaning works great if you’re trying to entertain and inflame. But in a real crisis, it collapses like a house of cards,” the former president said. Next week, Trump is set to officially accept his party’s nomination at the Republican National Convention. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are making campaign stops during Biden’s week in the spotlight, traveling to political battleground states that could play a pivotal role in the election. Trump headed to the Midwestern state of Iowa on Tuesday and later visited Yuma, Arizona, near the border with Mexico to assess the construction of a border wall to thwart undocumented immigrants from crossing into the United States. Вступну кампанію до закладів профосвіти продовжили до 1 листопада – МОН
Заклади професійної освіти зможуть приймати документи і зараховувати вступників до 1 листопада. Як повідомило 18 серпня Міністерство освіти і науки України, лист із рекомендацією продовжити терміни вступу розіслали обласним управлінням освіти і науки.
«Загальними правилами прийому до профтехів визначено, що зарахування вступників триває до початку занять, тобто до 1 вересня. Традиційно вступна кампанія продовжувалася ще на місяць і заклади робили додатковий набір у межах ліцензованого обсягу. Оскільки цього року через карантин нам довелося змінювати терміни вступу до вишів, ми вирішили видовжити їх для закладів профосвіти», – пояснив заступник міністра освіти і науки Андрій Вітренко.
Як заявили у МОН, однією із новацій цьогорічної кампанії є те, що вступники можуть подавати копії документів у кілька закладів одночасно, а потім, визначившись із закладом і професією, подавати оригінали.
Навчатися у профтеху можуть не тільки випускники шкіл, а й дорослі. Вони можуть пройти підвищення кваліфікації для вже наявної робітничої професії, опанувати нові навички або повністю змінити фах, додали у МОН.
За даними міністерства, у 2020 році для безоплатного навчання за регіональним або державним замовленням у закладах профосвіти є 119 674 місця.

Sanders Urges Progressives to Keep Agenda Alive with Vote for Biden
For the second time in four years, progressive voters’ hopes to elevate Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont to the top of the Democratic ticket were dashed this spring, when Sanders’ call for a social revolution and Medicare for All fell flat, and former Vice President Joe Biden surged to victory in the race for the presidential nomination. In 2016, many of these same liberal Democrats decided to sit out the general election after Hillary Clinton edged out Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination – and Sanders appeared half-hearted in urging them to back Clinton at the polls. But Sanders made a compelling argument Monday night – at the start of the 2020 Democratic National Convention – that progressives’ issues and policies will live on if they help the more moderate Biden defeat President Donald Trump in the November 3 general election. “The future of our democracy is at stake,” Sanders said in a live speech from his home in Burlington, Vermont. He added, “Many of the ideas we fought for, that just a few years ago were considered radical, are now mainstream.” The appeal for party unity was a departure for the self-styled democratic socialist who was the last remaining primary rival to Biden earlier this year. Sanders has not always advocated loyalty to the Democratic party, with whom he usually caucuses in the U.S. Senate. Progressive wing He is seen foremost as the leader of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, the group of liberal voters who support social reform policies intended to help working Americans, including universal health care, free college tuition, a higher minimum wage and a raft of other social benefits. Sanders rested his appeal to his supporters on the idea that defeating Trump is key to keeping progressive causes in the mainstream discussion. And I think it was quite impressive to many who were watching that he stayed on message,” said Lara Brown, director of the Graduate School of Political Management (GSPM) at the George Washington University. “Part of the case that he made last night was that the progressive agenda has really come more and more into the mainstream over the past few years and that that isn’t going to go away anytime soon,” Brown said. But progressives’ values could be jeopardized, Sanders told supporters, unless they vote for Biden to ensure Trump does not win a second presidential term. “Under this administration, authoritarianism has taken root in our country. I, and my family, and many of yours, know the insidious way authoritarianism destroys democracy, decency and humanity,” Sanders said Monday. Motivation to supporters Trump has repeatedly asserted that liberal Democrats like Sanders are out to “destroy the country,” and are promoting socialist values anathema to many Americans. Sanders’ rhetoric was intended to motivate his supporters to vote for Biden instead of staying home or choosing another candidate. He [Sanders] has to motivate his supporters to get out and vote for Biden, not to vote for another candidate,” Thurber said. While noting that he still has significant policy disagreements with Biden, Sanders also outlined in his speech the many areas where progressive causes could be advanced if Democrats retake the White House. Biden’s campaign worked with Sanders in the weeks leading up to the convention to ensure some of his progressive goals were included in the official platform of the Democratic Party. Sanders said Biden supported progressive causes such as raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour, paid family leave and funding for universal schooling for 3- and 4-year-olds while making child care affordable for millions of families. Sanders did note that his Medicare for All plan – a single, government-sponsored health insurance program for all Americans – did not make it into the party platform. “While Joe and I disagree on the best path to get to universal coverage, he has a plan that will greatly expand health care and cut the cost of prescription drugs. Further, he will lower the eligibility age of Medicare from 65 to 60,” Sanders said. Control of Senate With control of the Senate also at stake this election year, analysts say a key part of Sanders’ appeal to progressives was to remind them that putting a Democrat in the White House was the best way of ensuring their agenda becomes law. “He was very good at explaining to his supporters that progressives have won. They are now the mainstream of the Democratic Party. Their issues are the ones that are a top concern,” Brown said. If Democrats pick up the three to four seats needed for a majority in the Senate, Sanders is well-positioned to play a key role in leadership. One of his Democratic colleagues recognized his contribution Monday night after his speech. Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut tweeted, “The careful, purposeful steps Bernie Sanders has taken to bring the party together this spring and summer will be a huge part of the story we tell when Joe Biden wins.”

Mississippi Group Narrows Flag Options to 5
A group recommending a new Mississippi state flag chose five final designs Tuesday — three with a magnolia blossom, one with a magnolia tree and one with a shield that has wavy lines representing water. Mississippi legislators voted in late June to retire the last state flag in the U.S. with the Confederate battle emblem that’s broadly condemned as racist. “When the flag came down, it was one of the great days of my life,” Reuben Anderson, chairman of a nine-member flag commission, said during Tuesday’s meeting. The law shelving the old flag created the commission to come up with a new design that cannot include the Confederate battle emblem and must have the phrase, “In God We Trust.” Four of the designs chosen Tuesday are mostly or entirely red, white and blue. One has a stylized white magnolia tree on a blue background. Most have stars representing Mississippi as the 20th state. Each includes one star made of five diamond shapes that reflect the state’s Choctaw heritage. The five final designs will be manufactured. Commissioners hold their next meeting August 25, and those flags will be hoisted outside the Old Capitol in downtown Jackson. The Old Capitol is now a museum but was still the statehouse in 1894, when white supremacists in the Mississippi Legislature adopted a state flag with the Confederate battle emblem in the upper left corner. That vote reflected the backlash against political power African Americans briefly gained during Reconstruction. The state Supreme Court ruled in 2000 that even though the flag had remained in use, it lacked official status because state laws were updated in 1906 and sections describing the flag were not included. Mississippi residents voted in a 2001 election to keep the Confederate-themed flag, but it remained a divisive symbol in a state with a 38% Black population. All of Mississippi’s public universities and many local governments stopped flying it. Legislative leaders said for decades that they could not muster support to change the flag, but momentum shifted rapidly after Minneapolis police killed a Black man named George Floyd and protests against racial injustice happened across the U.S., including outside the Mississippi governor’s mansion. The final push to change the flag came from business, education, religion and sports leaders. Legislators created a nine-member commission, and that group received nearly 3,000 designs from the public. Commissioners will choose one design September 2, and that will go on the November 3 ballot. If voters accept the design, it will become the new Mississippi flag. If they reject it, the commission will find a new design to go on the ballot later. Even as the commission is working toward a new flag, some Mississippi residents are rebelling against change. Organizers of a group called Let Mississippi Vote said Monday that they are starting an initiative to put the old Confederate-themed flag and three other flag designs on the statewide ballot. But the initiative process is burdensome, and their efforts will be complicated by the coronavirus pandemic. If the initiative gets to the ballot, that election could be a year or two away. And, Mississippi could be flying a new flag by then.

US Postal Service Head to Testify Before Senate Panel Amid Criticism
The head of the U.S. Postal Service will testify Friday before the Republican-led Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee, a panel spokesman confirmed Tuesday. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy faces bipartisan criticism asserting he has made changes that have slowed mail deliveries just months before the Nov. 3 presidential election.
The postmaster general, who took control of the agency in June, previously agreed to testify next Monday before the Democrat-led House Oversight Committee.
DeJoy’s pending testimony comes as millions of Americans fearful of voting at polling places due to the coronavirus pandemic prepare to vote by mail in the November 3 election, raising concerns the Postal Service is not able to handle in a timely manner an anticipated record-setting surge in mail-in ballots.
The Senate panel said the hearing will scrutinize the “finances and operations of the United States Postal Service during COVID-19 and upcoming elections.” COVID-19 is the illness caused by the coronavirus.
One day before DeJoy’s appearance before the Senate committee, Democrats in the House of Representatives plan to vote to limit changes they contend would inhibit the processing of mailed-in ballots and provide an additional $25 billion in funding for the agency.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called the Democratic-controlled House back into session Sunday from its summer recess to vote on the Postal Service funding and reverse DeJoy-instituted changes they claim would possibly keep mailed-in ballots from arriving at election offices throughout the country in time to be counted in the election.FILE – Mailboxes are seen on a sidewalk in New York City, Aug. 14, 2020.Senate Republicans this week are expected to introduce coronavirus relief legislation that will include billions for the Postal Service. For months, the Republican president has insisted, without evidence, that states mailing ballots to voters will lead to election fraud, a rigged vote against him, and more widespread voting by Democrats.
Trump defended DeJoy, who has donated $1.2 million to his campaign since 2016 and almost $1.3 million to the Republican Party, for taking significant steps to cut costs at the agency and improve its performance.

У Сумах підняли прапор Білорусі на знак солідарності з протестувальниками
18 серпня на площі Незалежності у Сумах декілька десятків містян вийшли на акцію солідарності із білоруським народом у боротьбі проти авторитарного режиму.
Після промов зі словами підтримки білоруським протестувальникам, під пісні білоруського гурту Brutto організатори заходу підняли прапор Білорусі на флагштоці перед Сумською міською державною адміністрацією поряд із прапорами Сум та області.
За словами співорганізатора акції Андрія Букіна, організатори також сподіваються, що Сумська міська рада на своєму позачерговому засіданні 19 серпня ухвалить рішення на підтримку білоруських протестувальників.
Акції на підтримку білоруських протестувальників вже відбулися в інших українських містах, поміж них – Львів, Дніпро та Запоріжжя.

У Мінську й інших містах Білорусі від вечора 9 серпня тривають акції протесту. Люди протестують проти результатів виборів президента, на яких, за офіційними даними, перемогу здобув чинний голова держави Олександр Лукашенко. Він є президентом Білорусі вже 26 років.
Люди заявляють, що результати виборів, за якими Лукашенко отримав 80% голосів, а його головна конкурентка Світлана Тихановська – 10%, були сфальсифіковані.
Силовики вдавалися до насильства під час розгону демонстрантів, били їх, застосовували гумові кулі, кийки, водомети, сльозогінний газ. Загалом затримали кілька тисяч людей. Наразі під вартою лишаються 44 учасники протестів.

Посольство США закликає розслідувати спалення авто «Схем» та ймовірне прослуховування квартири Ткача
Посольство Сполучених Штатів у Києві висловило стурбованість останніми випадками, пов’язаними з журналістами проєкту розслідувань Радіо Свобода та каналу UA:Перший «Схеми».
«Вільні медіа є надважливим елементом життєздатної демократії, а журналісти повинні мати змогу виконувати свою роботу без утисків і залякувань. Ми стурбовані нещодавніми інцидентами, спрямованими проти співробітників Радіо Свобода, включаючи спалення автомобіля та підозру на прослуховування оселі», – йдеться в заяві посольства.
Дипломатична місія високо оцінила початкові заходи, які вживає влада до вивчення цих інцидентів. Водночас посольство «закликає до швидкого і всебічного розслідування».
Вночі 17 серпня в Броварах невідомі підпалили автомобіль програми журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» (спільний проєкт Радіо Свобода та телеканалу «UA: Перший»), який належить водієві програми – учаснику знімальної групи Борису Мазуру. Державна служба з надзвичайних ситуацій дійшла висновку, що авто загорілося через «занесення стороннього джерела запалювання».

Крім того, в ніч на 8 серпня журналіст «Схем» Михайло Ткач заявив, що виявив у себе вдома ознаки пристрою негласного стеження (тонкий глибокий отвір у стелі на кухні, що веде до спільного горища, до якого є доступ з різних під’їздів).
Напередодні журналіст отримував сигнали від своїх джерел про можливе стеження.
11 серпня програми Ткач подав скаргу на бездіяльність слідчих Національної поліції України, які не провели перевірку місця подій спеціальним обладнанням для виявлення прослуховуючого обладнання та слідів його встановлення чи зняття, а під час огляду приміщення користувались лише «підручними засобами».

Суд заарештував експоліцейського через підпал авто журналістки Радіо Свобода у Львові
Голова Галицького суду Львова Ірина Волоско обрала запобіжний захід експравоохоронцю Михайлові Чердаку, який причетний до підпалу машини львівської кореспондентки Радіо Свобода Галини Терещук.
Його заарештували з правом внесення застави у розмірі 168 тисяч гривень.
Оперативники СБУ у Львівській області затримали колишнього поліцейського 17 серпня. Він переховувався від слідства на одній із квартир Львова.
У ніч на 30 січня 2020 року 19-річний тодішній студент університету «Львівська політехніка» Якоб Сарахман підпалив машину. Згодом його затримали та відрахували з вишу. У ході слідства він назвав ім’я замовника – поліцейського Михайла Чердака, який наразі звільнений із поліції.
25 травня Галицький суд Львова виніс вирок у справі Сарахмана – 5 років позбавлення волі з 3-річним іспитовим терміном.
Також у справі фігурує ще одне прізвище – безробітного, раніше судимого Вадима Дмитренка.
Щодо двох підозрюваних – Михайла Чердака і Вадима Дмитренка було порушене кримінальне провадження за статтею 347 (умисне пошкодження майна журналіста) Кримінального кодексу України.
У день затримання ймовірного замовника підпалу авто львівської кореспондентки Радіо Свобода Галини Терещук відбувся підпал машини іншого співробітника Радіо Свобода – водія програми журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» Бориса Мазура.

Віцеспікерка Ради звернулася до Венедіктової та Авакова через пошкодження майна співробітників «Схем»
Віцеспікерка Верховної Ради Олена Кондратюк звернулася до генеральної прокурорки Ірини Венедіктової та міністра внутрішніх справ Арсена Авакова через підпал автомобіля водія програми журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» Бориса Мазура та можливе прослуховування журналіста Михайла Ткача.
Вона закликала правоохоронців провести швидке, повне та неупереджене розслідування інцидентів та притягнути винних осіб до відповідальності.
Кондратюк також пообіцяла парламентський контроль.
Вночі 17 серпня в Броварах невідомі підпалили автомобіль програми журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» (спільний проєкт Радіо Свобода та телеканалу «UA: Перший»), який належить водієві програми – учаснику знімальної групи Борису Мазуру. Державна служба з надзвичайних ситуацій дійшла висновку, що авто загорілося через «занесення стороннього джерела запалювання».
У ніч на 8 серпня журналіст «Схем» Михайло Ткач заявив, що виявив у себе вдома ознаки пристрою негласного стеження (тонкий глибокий отвір у стелі на кухні, що веде до спільного горища, до якого є доступ з різних під’їздів).
Напередодні журналіст отримував сигнали від своїх джерел про можливе стеження.
11 серпня програми Ткач подав скаргу на бездіяльність слідчих Національної поліції України, які не провели перевірку місця подій спеціальним обладнанням для виявлення прослуховуючого обладнання та слідів його встановлення чи зняття, а під час огляду приміщення користувались лише «підручними засобами».
Опитані Радіо Свобода вузькоспеціалізовані фахівці та відомі криміналісти-правники зійшлись на думці, що отвір у стелі квартири журналіста програми «Схеми» Михайла Ткача та виявлені пізніше поліцією отвори на горищі, вірогідно, свідчать саме про спроби встановити прихований пристрій негласного стеження. Думки опитаних експертів розійшлись хіба що в тому, чи записувальний пристрій вже встигли прибрати, чи його ще не встигли встановити; чи мова йде про відеоспостереження, чи аудіопрослуховування; та хто може за цим стояти.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo Book on COVID-19 Response Out in October
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has gained a national following through his management of the coronavirus pandemic, is writing a book that looks back on his experiences, and includes leadership advice and a close look at his relationship with the administration of President Donald Trump.
Crown announced Tuesday that Cuomo’s “American Crisis” will be released Oct. 13, three weeks before Election Day, when Trump is expected to face presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
The news comes the day after Cuomo addressed the Democratic National Convention and called the virus’ spread a metaphor for a country weakened by division. New York State has one of the lowest infection rates in the U.S., a welcome contrast to the spring, when it had one of the highest.
“In his own voice, Andrew Cuomo chronicles in ‘American Crisis’ the ingenuity and sacrifice required of so many to fight the pandemic,” according to Crown, “sharing his personal reflections and the decision-making that shaped his policy, and offers his frank accounting and assessment of his interactions with the federal government and the White House, as well as other state and local political and health officials.”
Cuomo had said last month that he was thinking of a book, commenting during a radio interview on WAMC that he wanted to document the “entire experience, because if we don’t learn from this then it will really compound the whole crisis that we’ve gone through.”
In an excerpt from “American Crisis” that Crown shared with The Associated Press, Cuomo emphasized the importance of confronting fear.
“The questions are what do you do with the fear and would you succumb to it,” he wrote. “I would not allow the fear to control me. The fear kept my adrenaline high and that was a positive. But I would not let the fear be a negative, and I would not spread it. Fear is a virus also.”
Financial terms for “American Crisis” were not disclosed. Cuomo was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients include former President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush. Cuomo is also the author of “All Things Possible: Setbacks and Success in Politics and Life,” which came out in 2014.
Cuomo, currently serving his third term, has been praised for his blunt, straightforward press conferences, and for a time was even mentioned as a possible presidential candidate. His style has differed notably from the more erratic approach of President Trump, a Republican with whom he has clashed often. Cuomo has said that Trump is “in denial” about the severity of the pandemic and has faulted him for ignoring advice from scientists. Trump has blamed Cuomo’s “poor management” for New York’s tens of thousands COVID-19 fatalities.
Cuomo has received some of his strongest criticism for the thousands of virus-related deaths at New York nursing homes. A recent AP investigation found that the state’s death toll of nursing home patients, already among the highest in the nation, could be significantly more than reported. Unlike every other state with major outbreaks, only New York explicitly says that it counts just residents who died on nursing home property and not those who were transported to hospitals and died there.
So far, Cuomo’s administration has declined to release the number. The governor has called criticism of nursing home deaths politically motivated.

US Democratic Party Foreign Policy Includes China Criticism, International Alliances
The Democratic Party’s proposed platform criticizes China’s trade practices, proposes less spending on national defense, and opposes “forever wars” as it seeks to lay out the party’s foreign policy goals and highlight differences with President Donald Trump. The 80-page platform, which is to be adopted at the Democratic convention this week, is largely symbolic because the presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden does not have to endorse its positions. However, the platform provides an official outline of the party’s vision and policy priorities. It was crafted by a panel of Democratic leaders, including Biden’s last remaining challenger for the Democratic nomination, Senator Bernie Sanders, and seeks to bridge the gap between the party’s progressive wing that includes Sanders, and Biden’s more moderate approach. However, Trump has struggled to fulfill a 2016 campaign promise to reduce overall U.S. troop deployments overseas.Kyle Kondik, a political analyst at the University of Virginia, says the Republican Party has routinely been seen as more hawkish than the Democratic Party, but said an argument can be made that Trump was less hawkish than his Democratic challenger in 2016, Hillary Clinton, who was criticized for her vote in favor of the Iraq war. Kondik said the same case could be made by Trump against Biden, who also voted in favor of the Iraq war when he was a senator.On Yemen, the Democratic platform calls for ending support for the Saudi-led war in that country. Україна та Ізраїль закликають паломників утриматися від поїздок до Умані Черкаської області на Рош га-Шана, повідомив Кабінет міністрів України.
«Керуючись рекомендаціями та застереженнями Міністерств охорони здоров’я України та Ізраїлю, наполегливо закликаємо усіх паломників, які планують взяти участь у цьогорічних святкових заходах з нагоди Рош га-Шана в Україні, утриматися від відвідання міста Умань через загрозливу епідемічну ситуацію», – йдеться в спільній українсько-ізраїльській урядовій заяві.
Водночас для тих, хто вирішив відвідати Умань, в уряді нагадали, що карантинні обмеження в Україні поширюються на всі публічні заходи і мають суворо дотримуватися.
У 2019 році для зустрічі юдейського 5780-го Нового року, який святкували із вечора 29 вересня до вечора 1 жовтня, до Умані прибули понад 30 тисяч паломників.
Могила в Умані цадика (праведника) Нахмана, засновника так званої брацлавської течії хасидизму – одна з найшанованіших святинь і місце паломництва для представників цієї течії. Усі юдеї з цієї течії хасидизму вважають своїм обов’язком побувати хоча б раз у житті на могилі цадика Нахмана і вірять, що новий рік, який вони зустріли на святі Рош га-Шана в Умані, обов’язково буде для них щасливим.

Українському журналісту й авторові Радіо Свобода Станіславу Асєєву присудили міжнародну премію «Вільна преса Східної Європи 2020» (Free Media Awards) за його репортажі про становище полонених і життя у зоні бойових дій.
Про це повідомили засновники премії – німецький фонд «Цайт-Штіфтунг» імені Ебелін і Герда Буцеріуса (ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius) і норвезька «Фундація Свобода слова» (The Fritt Ord Foundation).
«Станіслав Асєєв – відомий журналіст і письменник із Донецька в Україні. У 2017 році його затримали сепаратистські сили і катували в неволі. До того його репортажі – написані під вигаданим ім’ям – були важливим джерелом інформації про життя за лінією фронту на сході України», – йдеться в повідомленні.
Автор Радіо Свобода Станіслав Асєєв був звільнений у рамках обміну утримуваними особами на Донбасі 29 грудня 2019 року. Бойовики «ДНР» звинувачували його в шпигунстві й утримували з травня 2017 року.
Цього року премією також відзначено проєкт журналістських розслідувань «Схеми: корупція в деталях» (проєкт Радіо Свобода та телеканалу UA:Перший), азербайджанського фотографа Азіза Карімова і російські видання «Медиазона» і «Проект.Медиа».
«Цьогорічні премії «Вільної преси» присуджені хоробрим журналістам та редакціям, які безстрашно викривають корупцію і зловживання владою, порушення прав людей і які не піддаються залякуванням їхньої влади. Таким чином вони захищають свободу преси, яка є наріжною для функціонування громадянського суспільства», – пояснює Майкл Гьорінг, генеральний директор ZEIT Foundation.
«Розслідувальна журналістика й висвітлення спірних питань в авторитарних країнах вимагають багато відваги та великих запасів витривалості. Інформація, яку вдається публікувати лауреатам премії в результаті непростих досягнень у ворожому середовищі – життєво важлива та вирішальна для демократичних рухів у Східній Європі», – додав Кнут Олав Емас, виконавчий директор Fritt Ord Foundation.
Церемонія нагородження і конференція у зв’язку з пандемією відбудуться в червні 2021 року в Гамбурзі (Німеччина).
Премія ім. Герда Буцеріуса «Вільна преса Східної Європи» вручається щорічно, починаючи з 2000 року, журналістам та засобам масової інформації за їхню якість, професіоналізм і громадянську мужність.
Премія спрямована на заохочення тих журналістів, які, незважаючи на офіційні тиск і економічні труднощі, кидають виклик цензурі у всіх її проявах, у тому числі й самоцензурі.
З 2004 року премію вручає німецький фонд «Цайт-Штіфтунг» ім. Ебелін і Герда Буцеріуса (Zeit-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius) у співпраці з норвезьким фондом «Вільне слово» (Institusjonen Fritt Ord), який вручає премію «Вільна преса Росії». «Телевізійна програма «Схеми» – це взірець розслідувальної журналістики. Програма є спільним проєктом Радіо Свобода та UA:Перший. Завдяки своїм розслідуванням редакція щотижневої програми проливає світло на політичну корупцію та політичні зв’язки. На журналістів та команду неодноразово скоювали напади у зв’язку з їхньою роботою», – відзначають на сайті Free Media Awards.

МОЗ: педагоги не мають проходити медоглядів через карантин
В Україні педагоги через карантинні обмеження не мають проходити медоглядів, повідомив міністр охорони здоров’я Максим Степанов.
«Педагоги не мають проходити медоглядів. Відповідні зміни внесені у зв’язку з карантинними обмеженнями», – сказав він під час онлайн-брифінгу вранці 18 серпня.
Напередодні Степанов заявив: Міністерство охорони здоров’я очікує, що навчання у школах почнеться 1 вересня.
З 1 серпня набула чинності постанова Кабінету міністрів про нові правила адаптивного карантину через пандемію коронавірусного захворювання COVID-19, за якими регіони України ділять на зони, відповідно до інтенсивності поширення коронавірусу.
Відповідно до оприлюдненого раніше документа, адаптивний карантин в Україні продовжений до 31 серпня 2020 року.

Prominent Republicans Endorse Biden at Democratic Convention
John Kasich, the former Republican governor of Ohio, crossed party lines on Monday to speak at the Democratic National Convention in support of presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden. “I’m a lifelong Republican, but that attachment holds second place to my responsibility to my country. That’s why I’ve chosen to appear at this convention. In normal times, something like this would probably never happen, but these are not normal times,” Kasich said in his prerecorded speech on the opening night of the four-day Democratic Party convention. Kasich, who was one of President Donald Trump’s toughest rivals for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination and was the last to drop out of the race, is perhaps the most prominent Republican to both oppose Trump’s reelection and support Biden. His speech, while clearly welcomed by the Biden campaign, was dismissed as self-serving and disloyal by some conservative Republicans. Even a few progressive Democrats complained Kasich was being given an undeserved spotlight on the first night of the convention. Anti-Trump conservative A lifelong Republican, Kasich was an unbending, brash conservative when he served as a congressman in the 1990s. He became House Budget Committee chairman under Republican Newt Gingrich, the former Speaker of the House of Representatives, and engaged in contentious negotiations with then-Democratic President Bill Clinton to enact welfare reform, tax cuts and a balanced budget. Kasich was also a supporter of the Tea Party movement in 2010 that opposed former Democratic President Barack Obama’s effort to expand Medicaid, a government supported health care program for the poor.In this image from video, former Republican Ohio Gov. Kasich has been a frequent critic of Trump’s America First policies, especially protectionist trade practices, restrictive immigration regulations and what he called the president’s “divisive” tactics that have heightened political polarization in the country. Kasich supported President Trump’s impeachment for allegedly holding up aid to Ukraine to get political dirt on Biden and his son, Hunter Biden. Trump was ultimately acquitted of the charges in a Senate trial that ended Feb. 5. In 2016, Kasich said he did not vote for Trump, but could not support Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton either. Instead, he cast his vote for former Senator John McCain of Arizona, who was the 2008 Republican nominee. McCain died in August 2018. At the opening of this week’s Democratic convention, Kasich along with other disaffected Republicans — former New York Congresswoman Susan Molinari, former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman and Meg Whitman, CEO of Quibi — came to express support for Biden and try to persuade other Republicans to also cross over to vote for the Democratic candidate. “I know that Joe Biden, with his experience and his wisdom and his decency, can bring us together to help us find that better way,” Kasich said. The Lincoln Project, an anti-Trump, Republican-led political action committee, has also released ads supporting Biden’s campaign. “They’re more or less creating this permission gateway for Republicans to feel OK about not voting for the Republican nominee,” Republican strategist Rob Stutzman said in an interview with VOA. No Republican has ever won the presidency without winning Kasich’s home state of Ohio. In the 2016 general election, Trump won Ohio by more than 8 percentage points over Clinton. Did he officially drop out in 2016 or is he still actually running?” conservative talk show host Ben Shapiro asked during a recent interview with the Associated Press. Barry Bennett, a Republican consultant who worked for multiple Ohio Republicans, described Kasich as an “unemployed politician desperately seeking audience,” in an interview with the newspaper Roll Call. Some progressive Democrats, however, were also upset that the conservative Kasich, who supports abortion restrictions and opposes their expansive agenda to establish universal health care and increase economic assistance programs, was given a prime time speaking slot at the convention. Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rising progressive star in the party who only was given one minute to speak at the convention, on Monday tweeted that while Kasich is welcome to voice his support for Biden, “a Republican who fights against women’s rights doesn’t get to say who is or isn’t representative of the Dem party.” Political crossovers While rare for a prominent party leader to speak at an opposing party convention, it is not unprecedented. Then-Democratic Senator Zell Miller of Georgia endorsed President George W. Bush’s re-election at the Republican National Convention in 2004. Then-Senator Joe Lieberman from Connecticut, who had been the Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, spoke at the Republican convention eight years later to support Senator McCain. And in 2016, Michael Bloomberg, who had been a Republican mayor of New York City, gave a speech at the Democratic National Convention supporting Hillary Clinton.

«Схеми» опублікували відео моменту підпалу авто редакції з камер спостереження
Програма журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» (спільний проєкт Радіо Свобода та телеканалу UA:Перший) оприлюднила відео, на якому видно момент підпалу автомобіля редакції.
«Протягом усієї ночі і дня на місці інциденту працювали поліція і наші журналісти. Ми зібрали відео з довколишніх камер спостереження та від свідків інциденту – і зрештою знайшли зафіксований момент підпалу», – повідомили у редакції «Схем».
Вночі 17 серпня в Броварах невідомі підпалили автомобіль програми журналістських розслідувань «Схеми» (спільний проєкт Радіо Свобода та телеканалу UA:Перший), який належить водієві програми – учаснику знімальної групи Борису Мазуру.
Державна служба з надзвичайних ситуацій дійшла висновку, що авто загорілося через «занесення стороннього джерела запалювання».
У ніч на 8 серпня журналіст «Схем» Михайло Ткач заявив, що виявив у себе вдома ознаки пристрою негласного стеження (тонкий глибокий отвір у стелі на кухні, що веде до спільного горища, до якого є доступ з різних під’їздів).
Напередодні журналіст отримував сигнали від своїх джерел про можливе стеження.
11 серпня програми Ткач подав скаргу на бездіяльність слідчих Національної поліції України, які не провели перевірку місця подій спеціальним обладнанням для виявлення прослуховуючого обладнання та слідів його встановлення чи зняття, а під час огляду приміщення користувались лише «підручними засобами».
Опитані Радіо Свобода вузькоспеціалізовані фахівці та відомі криміналісти-правники зійшлись на думці, що отвір у стелі квартири журналіста програми «Схеми» Михайла Ткача та виявлені пізніше поліцією отвори на горищі, вірогідно, свідчать саме про спроби встановити прихований пристрій негласного стеження. Думки опитаних експертів розійшлись хіба що в тому, чи записувальний пристрій вже встигли прибрати, чи його ще не встигли встановити; чи мова йде про відеоспостереження, чи аудіопрослуховування; та хто може за цим стояти.
Поліція розпочала два кримінальні провадження через ситуацію з Михайлом Ткачем (за статтями про порушення недоторканності приватного життя та про незаконний обіг та використання прихованих записувальних пристроїв) і ще одне – через підпал автомобіля Бориса Мазура (умисне знищення або пошкодження майна).
Тимчасова виконувачка обов’язків президента Радіо Вільна Європа / Радіо Свобода Дейзі Сінделар закликала українську владу якнайшвидше розслідувати обидва інциденти.

Michelle Obama Calls Trump ‘Wrong President for Our Country’ as Democrats Open Convention
Former first lady Michelle Obama hailed presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden as a capable leader for a country of “compassionate, resilient, decent people,” while sharply criticizing President Donald Trump as lacking the ability to understand the feelings and experiences of others. Capping the first of four nights of an extraordinary virtual Democratic national convention on Monday, Obama strongly argued that Trump had failed to adequately respond to economic and social crises and the coronavirus pandemic at home while turning away from international alliances built by previous administrations. “Let me be as honest and clear as I possibly can,” she said in a prerecorded speech. “Donald Trump is the wrong president for our country. Biden’s vice presidential running mate, California Senator Kamala Harris — the first Black woman and first South Asian American on a national party ticket in the U.S – anchors the Wednesday night lineup, along with former President Obama, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Biden is set to officially accept the party’s nomination Thursday night. He plans to give his address in his home state of Delaware with only aides and political advisers present. Meanwhile, Trump and Vice President Mike Pence are visiting several political battleground states this week to try to upstage the Democrats, including a stop Thursday by Trump near where Biden grew up in the northeastern Pennsylvania city of Scranton.
