Biden’s Executive Orders on Immigration Hint at Future Action
U.S. President Joe Biden’s executive orders this week reversing Trump administration immigration policies change little on the ground now but set the stage for future action, experts told VOA.It is a message Biden himself reinforced when he signed three orders Tuesday.“I want to make it clear — there’s a lot of talk, with good reason, about the number of executive orders that I have signed. I’m not making new law. I’m eliminating bad policy,” he told reporters.For now, immigrant rights advocates are signaling a wait-and-see approach as the new administration launches a process to review restrictive immigration policies implemented by Trump.“If there’s an existing regulation, and then there’s a process to go through to get rid of the regulation, some things are just going to take longer than others as a procedural matter,” Omar Jadwat, director of the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Immigrants’ Rights Project, told VOA.Backers of the Trump administration’s immigration initiatives are warning of chaos at the U.S. southern border if policies return to what they were before Trump was in the White House.Task force to reunite separated familiesBiden’s first action ordered a task force to identify all migrant children who were separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border under the previous administration’s “Zero Tolerance” policy for undocumented arrivals. While most have been reunited, several hundred children remain in U.S. custody while attempts continue to locate their parents or other family members, many of whom were deported to their countries of origin.ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt said he is “pleased” with the creation of the task force but notes that the executive action does not address whether parents removed from the U.S. will be given humanitarian protections and allowed to come back to the United States to reunite with their children.Biden’s order asks for an initial report in 120 days — a time frame that does not satisfy Gelernt, who was the lead attorney in a 2018 class-action lawsuit the ACLU filed against the U.S. government over family separations.“Separated families need immediate action. But University of San Francisco law and migration studies professor Bill Hing said when it comes to family reunification, Biden needs to “offer more.”“Part of the remedy is that you let the people come (back) because it’s not just to get a visa, it’s to get services,” Hing said, adding, “They all need mental health services.”US border policiesBiden’s second order sets in motion a series of reviews, including the Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, also known as Migrant Protection Protocols (MPP), which have forced tens of thousands of asylum-seekers to await U.S. immigration court dates on the Mexican side of the border.Though MPP has been suspended going forward, it remains unclear what will happen to people who have been placed in the program and are waiting in Mexico for their immigration court date.The Biden administration is also reviewing a possible relaunching of the Central American Minors Program.Before the Trump administration, foreign minors could be lawfully reunited with family members already living in the United States if they met certain requirements. Trump ended the program in 2017.“One of the things (in the executive order) is to try to expedite the reunification of family members rather than having a young person wait abroad for maybe one or two years while the normal paperwork is in process,” said New York-based Legal Aid Society immigration attorney Hasan Shafiqullah.Review of legal immigration restrictionsThe third executive action directs the State Department, the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security to reevaluate existing regulations, orders, guidance documents, policies and other agency actions taken in the last four years pertaining to immigration.Chief among them is the former administration’s expansion and enforcement of the public charge rule, which sets forth an immigrant’s likelihood to rely on public assistance programs as a criterion in assessing a permanent residency application.Biden’s order also calls for improving the U.S. naturalization process by reducing barriers and streamlining procedures.Immigration attorney L. Patricia Ice with the Mississippi Immigration Rights Alliance said the order is aimed at eliminating barriers and streamlining the existing naturalization process.“I think this is one of the important parts of this executive order, because it will make the naturalization process easier,” she said. “It will make it shorter, so that people who apply for naturalization won’t have to wait a year or more. I have had clients who have been waiting for a long time to get an interview.”Conservative reactionLora Ries, a senior research fellow at the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank based in Washington, said in a statement that the executive orders are harmful and will undermine America’s immigration system.“America’s immigration policy should protect our borders, uphold our laws, and safeguard our values, but these immigration executive orders are just more evidence that the Biden administration is intent on implementing a radical immigration agenda that does none of those things,” she said.Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina said the orders “undercut bipartisan immigration solutions.”“The refusal to continue building the border wall and changing Trump asylum policies requiring migrants to wait in Mexico for their court date are formulas for disaster and will create massive future runs on the border,” he said.Immigrant advocates, by contrast, call Biden’s executive actions a much-needed starting point.“Things require additional agency action for process to take place. … It kind of sets out a broad framework and provides some guideposts but really leaves it to the (U.S.) agencies to fill it out right and figure out,” the ACLU’s Jadwat said.

Biden Renews Commitment for $1,400 COVID Stimulus Checks
U.S. President Joe Biden renewed his commitment Wednesday to send $1,400 checks to millions of adult Americans to boost the country’s coronavirus-ravaged economy. But he said he was open to Republican demands to tighten restrictions on who would get the money. In a call to Democratic lawmakers in the House of Representatives and later at a White House meeting with a group of Democratic senators, Biden called for quick passage of his $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package that includes the stimulus checks, pushing aside a call by some Republican senators for a more limited $618 billion deal. Biden told the House lawmakers he was willing to set lower income limits on who would get the $1,400 checks, but not cut the size of the stipends. Coupled with $600 payments approved by former President Donald Trump in December, the combined $2,000 in assistance would equal Biden’s promise during his winning campaign last year for the White House. Republicans and some Democrats have called for only sending the payments to people with much lower incomes. “We can better target the number, I’m OK with that,” Biden said. Senate Republicans have called for issuing $1,000 payments for individuals earning up to $40,000 or couples making twice that, while completely phasing out the payments at $50,000 for singles or $100,000 for married couples. But Biden told reporters, “I think we’ll get some Republicans” to vote for his relief measure. According to several people listening to the call, Biden told the House Democrats, “Let’s stick together. I have your back, and I hope you’ll have mine.” The president made an emotional case for quick approval of the virus relief aid, saying suicides in the U.S. were increasing at an alarming rate, and drug addiction was worsening during the pandemic. Biden told the Democrats the Republicans’ $618 billion package “was not even in the cards.” Later, Biden met with a group of Senate Democratic leaders at the White House. The Biden measure includes billions for vaccine distribution and other medical equipment to fight the pandemic. His proposal also would hike the national minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15, which most Republicans oppose. Senate Democrats on Tuesday put Biden’s $1.9 trillion package on a track for fast passage, likely with little or no Republican support. With a 50-49 vote starting discussions on government spending, the Senate cleared the way for eventual approval of Biden’s relief plan with a simple majority rather than the 60-vote threshold required for most legislation.

Will Republicans Remain the Party of Trump?
Donald Trump is no longer in the White House, but the former U.S. president’s influence is still keenly felt on Capitol Hill, where the January 6 rioting by his supporters has created deep divisions within the Republican Party.House Republicans planned to meet Wednesday to decide the futures of two members of their caucus on opposite sides of the debate over Trump: Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the third-ranking Republican leader in the House, and freshman Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, who has expressed support for far-right conspiracy views, including those of QAnon.At issue is whether to strip the pro-Trump Greene of her committee assignments and whether to remove Cheney from the Republican leadership team for her vote to impeach Trump. US Congressional Leaders Pay Tribute to Officer Who Died Following Capitol Riot
Congressional leaders gathered Wednesday in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda to pay tribute to Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, who died after being injured during the siege of the Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump on January 6. Sicknick’s remains arrived Tuesday at the Capitol in a solemn ceremony featuring dozens of Capitol Police officers, who stood at attention as his urn was carried up the steps to the Rotunda. In remarks during a ceremony Wednesday, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called Sicknick a patriot and said he will never be forgotten. “Each day, when members (of Congress) enter the Capitol, this temple of democracy, we will remember his sacrifice,” she said. Йдеться про чотирьох колишніх посадовців «Вектор Банку», в тому числі – колишнього голову правління.
«Слідством встановлено, що посадові особи банку вчиняли свідомо збиткові операції — надавали кредити власним фіктивним підприємствам. Таким чином, вони незаконно вивели з банку 28 мільйонів гривень. Так, колишній голова правління банку за пособництва екскерівників структурних підрозділів ПАТ «Вектор Банк» обвинувачуються у заволодінні чужим майном шляхом зловживання службовим становищем», – повідомляє ДБР.

Низка українських громадських ініціатив, які спеціалізуються на протидії дезінформації, прокоментували запровадження санкцій проти Тараса Козака і його каналів «112 Україна», ZIK та Newsone. Заяву оприлюднив Український кризовий медіа-центр.
Активісти стверджують, що заборона діяльності цих каналів не становить загрози свободі слова. Обстоюючи цю думку, вони вказують на те, що ці медіа ретранслюють російську пропаганду, в тому числі наративи про «фашизм в Україні», «русофобію», «Україну як країну, що зазнала невдачі» та «Україну, контрольовану Заходом».

Також організації вказують на те, що заборонені канали «неодноразово слугували інструментом політичного піару на користь проросійської політичної партії та її власника», а також запрошували експертів без відповідної освіти та досвіду.

Телеканали у своїй заяві розкритикували санкції та назвали рішення влади «політичною розправою над невгодними ЗМІ».
Голова Національної спілки журналістів України Сергій Томіленко заявив, що «позасудова раптова заборона діяльності трьох українських телеканалів – це надзвичайна ситуація».
Українські провайдери вже почали вимикати «112 Україна», NewsOne та ZIK.

Pentagon Chief Purges Defense Boards; Trump Loyalists Out
Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered hundreds of Pentagon advisory board members to resign this month as part of a broad review of the panels, essentially purging several dozen who were appointed last-minute under the Trump administration.
During the last two months of his tenure, former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller removed a number of longtime members from several defense policy, health, science and business boards and replaced many with loyalists of former President Donald Trump. More than 30 of those replacements will now be forced to resign, including former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich, retired Brig. Gen. Anthony Tata and former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski.
“I am directing the immediate suspension of all advisory committee operations until the review is completed unless otherwise directed by myself or the deputy secretary of defense,” Austin said in a memo released Tuesday. And he ordered all committee members who were appointed by the defense secretary to resign no later than Feb. 16.
Austin said the review will assess whether each board provides value and make sure its focus aligns with “our most pressing strategic priorities and the National Defense Strategy.”
Tata, a former Fox News commentator, failed to get through Senate confirmation for the top Pentagon policy job early last year because of offensive remarks he had made, including about Islam. In November, however, Trump appointed him to that same post, just days after firing then-Defense Secretary Mark Esper and putting Miller in the job.
Miller appointed Tata to the Defense Policy Board on Jan. 19, his last full day on the job. Gingrich was appointed to that same board. Lewandowski was appointed to the Defense Business Board.
A senior defense official said Austin’s decision was driven by the frenetic activity of Miller to remove dozens of board members and replace them in such a short amount of time between Trump’s election loss and the inauguration of President Joe Biden.
Of the 42 advisory panels listed in Austin’s memo, 31 will have their members removed, six will be part of the review but their members will be retained, and five others have either no members at this time or have concluded their business. Among the 31 are some of the department’s most well known boards, including those with purview over defense policy, science, health, innovation, Arlington National Cemetery and women in the military.
All together there are more than 600 members on the 42 boards. Defense officials said they don’t know exactly how many are being asked to resign, but it will be hundreds.
The boards of visitors for the Army, Navy and Air Force academies will keep their members, because those are presidential appointments that Austin does not have the authority to overturn. Among the Trump appointees who will remain on those boards are his former press secretary Sean Spicer and longtime adviser Kellyanne Conway. Those boards, however, will be subject to the review.
One new congressionally mandated commission is also being purged of the four members that Miller appointed in early January. The panel hasn’t started its work yet, but will be responsible for figuring out how to go about renaming military bases and property that honor Confederate leaders. The panel is not subject to Austin’s broader review, but he intends to appoint four new members.
In a letter to Austin this week, U.S. Reps. Anthony Brown, D-Md., and Joyce Beatty, D-Ohio, called for the removal of the four Miller appointees on the renaming board. Trump had opposed the renaming of bases, and cited that as a reason for vetoing the defense bill, which included a provision setting up the panel to handle the process.
“Those who are called to serve their nation in this matter must have a deep understanding of and expertise in the history of Confederate monuments and their role in the white supremacist movement,” Brown and Beatty wrote to Austin.
The defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations, said Austin believed that stopping the activity of all the boards and doing a more intensive review was the fairest and most consistent process.
Officials said the review will look at whether the boards have overlapping jurisdictions and whether they should be realigned or if money could be saved by trimming some of them. It also will make recommendations on the membership balance, size and mission of all the boards.

Bidens Pay Respects to Late Capitol Police Officer
U.S. President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill, paid their respects late Tuesday to Brian Sicknick, the U.S. Capitol Police officer who died defending the Capitol from a pro-Trump mob that stormed the building last month.
Sicknick’s remains arrived at the Capitol a short time earlier and dozens of Capitol Police officers stood at attention as his urn was carried up the steps to the Rotunda where he is lying in honor.
Capitol Police were given an opportunity to participate in a viewing period overnight.
Congressional leaders took part in the solemn arrival ceremony, and lawmakers will pay tribute to Sicknick at a Wednesday morning ceremony before his remains are taken to Arlington National Cemetery.

Лукашенку, президентство якого не визнають країни Заходу, довіряють 36%, Байдену – 26,7%, Макрону – 26,2%, Путіну – 14,4%.
Водночас за балансом «довіри-недовіри» лідирують Байден та Макрон (плюс 3,4% та плюс 3% відповідно). Путін і Лукашенко мають від’ємний баланс «довіри-недовіри» (мінус 65,4% та мінус 17,6% відповідно).

«Я утримався. Санкції добрі там, де ми не можемо покарати за українським законодавством. А тут усе не на місці. І до каналів санкції – це погано. Незважаючи на те, чиї вони», – сказав Разумков.

Рішення про санкції проти телеканалів «112 Україна», NewsOne та Zik давно зріло в суспільстві, заявив міністр культури та інформаційної політики України Олександр Ткаченко в телеграмі.
«Цей кейс є винятковим(!), але вчасним. І не тільки через інформаційний тероризм і загрозу безпеці України цих інструментів пропаганди Кремля. Але й через масові порушення журналістських стандартів, фейки та маніпуляції», – написав Ткаченко.
Він вважає «112 Україна», NewsOne та Zik «іноземною пропагандистською машиною, яка була сформована в Україні і опосередковано профінансована Москвою, де про свободу слова вже давно не йдеться».
«Тому рішення РНБО – симетричне на щоденні інформаційні та пропагандистські атаки на нашу свободу та незалежність. Це логічне завершення розслідування Тимчасової слідчої комісії, у якій я брав участь ще під час роботи народним депутатом. Тоді ми з’ясовували, як відбувалися оборудки під час зміни власників телеканалів 112, ZIK та NewsOne, які сьогодні належать одній людині – правій руці Медведчука, депутату Тарасу Козаку», – додав Ткаченко.
Він наголосив, що свобода слова та права людини для України – ключове.

House Democrats, Trump Lawyers Lay Out Clashing Views Ahead of Impeachment Trial
House Democratic impeachment managers and lawyers for Donald Trump on Tuesday laid out their arguments in separate briefs ahead of the former president’s Senate trial next week on charges of inciting a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol on January 6. The House Democratic prosecutors charged that Trump’s incendiary words and actions in the run-up to the attack led his followers to descend on the Capitol “like a loaded cannon” to try to prevent the certification of Democrat Joe Biden’s election victory over Trump. The riots left five people, including a Capitol Police officer, dead and dozens of others injured. “President Trump’s conduct must be declared unacceptable in the clearest and most unequivocal terms,” they wrote. Trump’s defense lawyers rejected the charges and questioned the constitutionality of the trial, saying there is no precedent for trying a president after he has left office. They also said the former president stands by his claim that the election results were “suspect” and in any event his statements about the election were protected under the U.S. Constitution’s First Amendment. The filings foreshadow the legal arguments both sides will present as the Senate meets beginning next Tuesday to decide whether to convict the 74-year-old former president for fomenting violence at the Capitol and bar him from returning to office. Trump Aimed ‘Loaded Cannon’ of Supporters at Capitol, Democrats Allege
Donald Trump endangered the lives of all members of Congress when he aimed a mob of supporters “like a loaded cannon” at the U.S. Capitol, House Democrats said Tuesday in making their most detailed case yet for why the former president should be convicted and permanently barred from office.
The legal brief forcefully links Trump’s baseless efforts to overturn the results of the presidential election to the deadly Jan. 6 riot at the Capitol, saying he bears “unmistakable” blame for actions that directly threatened the underpinnings of American democracy. It argues that he must be found guilty when his impeachment trial opens before the Senate next week on a charge of inciting the siege.
“His conduct endangered the life of every single Member of Congress, jeopardized the peaceful transition of power and line of succession, and compromised our national security,” the Democratic managers of the impeachment case wrote. “This is precisely the sort of constitutional offense that warrants disqualification from federal office.”
The legal brief lays out for the first time the arguments House lawmakers expect to present at the impeachment trial. It not only explicitly faults him for his role in the riot but also aims to preemptively rebut defense claims that Trump’s words were somehow protected by the First Amendment or that an impeachment trial is unconstitutional, or even unnecessary, now that Trump has left office. “This is not a case where elections alone are a sufficient safeguard against future abuse; it is the electoral process itself that President Trump attacked and that must be protected from him and anyone else who would seek to mimic his behavior,” the legal brief states.
Lawyers for Trump are expected to file their own brief Tuesday. In a Fox News appearance Monday night, one of the attorneys, David Schoen, said he would argue that the trial was unconstitutional, that efforts to bar Trump from office were undemocratic. and that his words were protected by the First Amendment.Who Will Represent Trump at His Impeachment Trial ? Less than two weeks before the Trump’s second impeachment trial, the former president introduces new defense team Democrats made clear that they disagree with all points.
“The only honorable path at that point was for President Trump to accept the results and concede his electoral defeat. Instead, he summoned a mob to Washington, exhorted them into a frenzy, and aimed them like a loaded cannon down Pennsylvania Avenue,” they wrote in their 77-page brief.
The Democrats draw heavily on the words of prominent Republicans who have criticized the former president, including Wyoming. Rep. Liz Cheney, who voted for his impeachment and said there has never been a “greater betrayal” by a president, and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, who said Trump “provoked” the rioters.
Still, Republicans have signaled that acquittal is likely, with many saying they think Congress should move on and questioning the constitutionality of an impeachment trial — Trump’s second — now that he has left office. In a test vote in the Senate last week, 45 Republicans voted in favor of an effort to dismiss the trial over those constitutional concerns.
Though no president has been tried after departing the White House, Democrats say there is precedent, pointing to an 1876 impeachment of a secretary of war who resigned his office in a last-ditch attempt to avoid an impeachment trial. The Senate held it anyway.Who Are the Impeachment Managers Prosecuting Trump’s Trial? The former president is facing a charge of “incitement of insurrection” in connection with the mob that invaded the Capitol as US lawmakers met to certify the election results that put President Joe Biden in office The Democrats write that the framers of the Constitution would not have wanted to leave the country defenseless against “a president’s treachery in his final days, allowing him to misuse power, violate his Oath, and incite insurrection against Congress and our electoral institutions” simply because he is leaving office. Setting that precedent now would “horrify the Framers,” the brief says.
“There is no ‘January Exception’ to impeachment or any other provision of the Constitution,” the Democrats wrote. “A president must answer comprehensively for his conduct in office from his first day in office through his last.”
Trump was impeached by the House while still in office, they note, forcing a Senate trial. And there are precedents for trying former officials.
“Trump is personally responsible for a violent attack on the Capitol,” they wrote. “He was impeached while still in office. The case for trying him after he has left office is stronger than any of the precedents.”

У Дніпрі вшанували письменника-земляка Валер’яна Підмогильного до 120-річчя з дня народження
У Дніпрі, у музеї «Літературне Придніпров’я», відкрили виставку, присвячену українському письменникові «Розстріляного відродження» Валер’яну Підмогильному до 120-річчя з дня його народження. У будівлі, де наразі музей, 1920 року була українська школа, де молодий Підмогильний викладав математику.
Як розповіла Радіо Свобода кураторка Анастасія Теплякова, в мініекспозиції представили експонати, пов’язані з життям і творчістю письменника-земляка. Один із найцікавіших експонатів – російсько-український фразеологічний словник, який Підмогильний уклав разом з Євгеном Плужником. Це – маловідоме видання навіть у колі фахівців.
Ще один раритет – копія аркуша із записника Підмогильного, де він пише, що свій найвідоміший роман «Місто» задумував як комедію.
«Рукою Підмогильного написано, що він задумав комедію й хотів посміятися, а вийшов перший урбаністичний роман в українській літературі. Він пише, що задум не вдався – від комедії не залишилось нічого, але тему цю планує продовжувати», – сказала Анастасія Теплякова.
Серед іншого в експозиції – книга спогадів про Підмогильного «Нащадок степу», упорядником якої є краєзнавець Микола Чабан.
Крім того, музейники презентують світлини, зокрема ту, на якій Підмогильному 14 років, ранні прозові твори прозаїка й різні видання роману «Місто», одне з оповідань письменника, переписане рукою Валер’яна Поліщука, листи до дружини та сина Романа, надіслані з ув’язнення, тощо.
Виставка працюватиме до кінця лютого.
Цього дня музейники поклали квіти до меморіального знаку Підмогильному, встановленому на фасаді закладу.
Валер’ян Підмогильний (1901– 1937), виходець із невеликого села Чаплі, що нині в межах Дніпра, був першим українським письменником-передвісником європейського екзистенціалізму. Був розстріляний 3 листопада 1937 року в урочищі Сандармох, що в Карелії.

У Португалії розпочався суд у справі про смерть українця Гоменюка
У Португалії 2 лютого відбулося перше судове засідання у справі про вбивство громадянина України Ігоря Гоменюка. Про це повідомила в коментарі Радіо Свобода перекладачка адвоката родини Гоменюка Анна Гуцул.
«Перше судове засідання сьогодні відбулося нарешті. Були присутні всі захисники трьох обвинувачених. Був присутній адвокат, що захищає інтереси Оксани (дружини – ред.) та дітей Ігоря Гоменюка… Кожен адвокат (обвинувачених – ред.) сказав, що його підзахисний не винний», – розповіла Гуцул.
За її словами, троє обвинувачених – інспектори Служби у справах іноземців і кордонів (SEF) Дуарте Лажею, Бруно Совса та Луїз Сілва були присутні на засіданні. Вони заперечують свою причетність до злочину.
«Кожен із них виступив… Кожен із них говорив, що він не винен. Вони виступили з такою ідеєю: начебто, коли вони ввійшли, то Ігор вже був зв’язаний цим скотчем, руки й ноги в нього були зв’язані, а вони його знайшли вже в такому стані», – розповіла Гуцул.
Перекладачка також зазначила, що судове засідання продовжиться завтра. Суд повинен заслухати свідків.
42-річний українець Ігор Гоменюк був затриманий працівниками Служби у справах іноземців і кордонів (SEF) в аеропорті Лісабону 10 березня 2020 року – за словами його родини, він прибув туди в справах працевлаштування. Через два дні перебування в центрі тимчасового тримання мігрантів Гоменюк помер. За даними судово-медичної експертизи, його тіло було все вкрите слідами побиття. У нього лишилася дружина і двоє дітей.
Як повідомляв голова Спілки українців Португалії Павло Садоха, побитого чоловіка, скутого кайданками, лишили на ніч одного в кімнаті без відеонагляду, де з ним стався приступ епілепсії. Внаслідок цього Гоменюк задихнувся.
Один із обвинувачених заявляв у пресі, що заперечує обвинувачення в убивстві, і покладав вину за смерть Гоменюка на стан здоров’я затриманого, відсутність медичної допомоги і дії інших осіб. Двоє інших обвинувачених із засобами інформації не спілкувалися, повідомляло агентство Reuters.
Правозахисники заявляють, що трагедія висвітлила системну культуру жорстокості в SEF. Адвокат удови Гоменюка Жозе Ґашпар Швальбах заявив агентству, що провів уже багато справ проти цієї служби і що його мета – «ліквідувати цю службу і змінити законодавство».
Державні посадовці заперечують таку позицію і заявляють, що йдеться про окремо взяту трагедію, а не про систему. Профспілка працівників SEF заперечує існування в службі культури зловживань.
Міністр внутрішніх справ Португалії Едуарду Кабріта теж виступив на захист SEF. У грудні він обіцяв, що в січні подасть до парламенту план реструктуризації служби, але цього не сталося, пише Reuters.
Прем’єр-міністр Португалії Антоніу Кошта в січні схвалив виділення суми в 800 тисяч євро як відшкодування родині Гоменюка.

Trump hired David Schoen of Alabama and Bruce Castor of Pennsylvania to defend him from the charge of incitement of insurrection regarding the January 6 pro-Trump mob that stormed the U.S. Capitol.
They replaced Butch Bowers and Deborah Barbier, Trump’s former leading lawyers. The two prominent South Carolina attorneys left after they and the former president failed to reach agreement on the best impeachment strategy, according to media reports.
Trump wanted to argue there was mass election fraud, but his legal team wanted to focus on the constitutionality of the process, CNN reported.
Who are the lawyers on Trump’s legal team?
Schoen: The 67-year-old attended Boston College Law School and then began his legal career in the Deep South. Schoen was allegedly preparing to represent financier Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender who faced charges of sex trafficking, at the time of his death in jail.
Castor: He is a former Republican district attorney in Pennsylvania who made headlines after refusing to prosecute comedian Bill Cosby in a sex crime case. Cosby was later prosecuted by a different district attorney. Castor, 59, who reportedly considered running for Pennsylvania governor in 2014, holds a law degree from Washington and Lee University.

Рада збільшила розмір допомоги дітям з тяжкими хворобами
Верховна Рада України ухвалила законопроєкт № 2024 «Про внесення змін до статті 18-7 Закону України «Про державну допомогу сім’ям з дітьми» щодо підвищення розмірів допомоги для дітей із тяжкими хворобами». Про це повідомила пресслужба парламенту.
За це рішення проголосували 345 депутатів.
Зокрема, законопроєктом передбачено підвищення виплат до двох прожиткових мінімумів:
на дітей, хворих на тяжкі перинатальні ураження нервової системи, тяжкі вроджені вади розвитку, рідкісні орфанні захворювання, онкологічні, онкогематологічні захворювання, дитячий церебральний параліч, тяжкі психічні розлади, цукровий діабет I типу (інсулінозалежний), гострі або хронічні захворювання нирок IV ступеня
на дитину, яка отримала тяжку травму, потребує трансплантації органу, потребує паліативної допомоги
Зараз допомога дітям з тяжкими хворобами складає один прожитковий мінімум.
Прожитковий мінімум для працездатних осіб у 2021 році складає 2270 гривень, для дітей віком до 6 років — 1921 гривня, для дітей віком від 6 до 18 років — 2395 гривень.

Уповноважена Верховної Ради України Людмила Денісова в ефірі Радіо Крим.Реалії повідомила, скільки зараз, за її даними, українських політичних в’язнів утримують у Росії, а також в окупованому нею Криму.
Їхня кількість збільшується, сказала вона. «На сьогоднішній день 109 осіб перебувають у місцях несвободи, з них 33 людини в окупованому Криму – двоє відбувають покарання, 31 у слідчому ізоляторі (і ще одна людина під судом). Інші перебувають у Росії, з них теж частина відбуває покарання, частина перебуває у слідчих ізоляторах», – сказала Денісова.
При цьому, додала вона, зі згаданих 109 політв’язнів 75 – це кримські татари.
26 січня Людмила Денісова також повідомляла, що з початку січня 2021 року кількість незаконно утримуваних громадян України на окупованих територіях Донецької м Луганської областей зросла і становила на той час 267 осіб, із них 226 – цивільні особи, у тому числі 4 волонтерів, 37 – військовослужбовці і 4 – бійці добровольчих формувань.

Гібридні російські сили п’ять разів порушили режим тиші протягом доби 1 лютого, повідомляє штаб Операції Об’єднаних сил.
Зокрема обстріли зафіксували поблизу Авдіївки – з автоматичного станкового ручного протитанкового та підствольного гранатометів.
«Біля населеного пункту Пищевик окупанти вели вогонь з автоматичних станкових гранатометів, а неподалік Новомихайлівки – зі стрілецької зброї. В районі відповідальності оперативно-тактичного угруповання «Північ» російсько-окупаційні війська відкривали вогонь з автоматичного станкового та станкового протитанкового гранатометів, великокаліберних кулеметів та стрілецької зброї поблизу Південного», – заявляє штаб.

Збройний конфлікт на Донбасі триває від 2014 року після російської окупації Криму. Україна і Захід звинувачують Росію у збройній підтримці бойовиків. Кремль відкидає ці звинувачення і заявляє, що на Донбасі можуть перебувати хіба що російські «добровольці».
За даними ООН, від квітня 2014-го до 31 липня 2020 року внаслідок збройного конфлікту на Донбасі загинули від 13 100 до 13 300 людей.

Зеленський призначив державні стипендії понад 100 діячам культури й мистецтва
Президент України Володимир Зеленський підписав указ про призначення державних стипендій видатним діячам культури і мистецтва, повідомила 1 лютого пресслужба голови держави.
За документом, 33 діячі культури і мистецтва отримуватимуть від держави довічні стипендії, 86 – призначили стипендії строком на два роки.
«З набранням чинності указом особам, зазначеним у статті 1 цього документа, яким стипендія вже призначена президентом України на певний строк, надалі виплачується стипендія, передбачена цим указом», – йдеться в указі.
28 січня Зеленський видав указ про заснування стипендій, премій та грантів для відмінників.
Вони передбачають, що найкращі учасники зовнішнього незалежного оцінювання (ЗНО) отримуватимуть щомісяця президентську стипендію в розмірі 10 тисяч гривень, переможці всеукраїнських учнівських олімпіад – разову премію у 20 тисяч гривень, а переможці міжнародних олімпіад – 100 тисяч грн.

Biden, Senate Republicans Far Apart on New Virus Relief Bill
U.S. President Joe Biden is hosting 10 Republican senators for talks Monday about a new round of coronavirus economic relief, but the U.S. leader and the lawmakers are far apart on how much should be spent. The Democratic president, in the second week of his four-year term, has proposed a $1.9 trillion package but the opposition lawmakers on Monday called for a $618 billion deal. The White House meeting comes after the Republicans sent a letter to Biden, urging him Sunday to negotiate on a new relief deal rather than trying to get his approved solely with the votes of congressional Democrats. Ahead of the meeting, White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that while the president is willing to negotiate, “Clearly, he thinks the package size needs to be closer to what he proposed than smaller.” Biden said on Twitter, “Hardworking Americans need help, and they need it now. That’s why I’m calling on Congress to immediately pass my American Rescue Plan that will deliver direct relief, extend unemployment insurance, help folks put food on the table and keep a roof over their heads, and more.” Both Biden and the Republicans are calling for $160 billion for testing, vaccines and personal protective equipment on top of hundreds of billions that were approved last year as the virus swept into the United States. But the president and the lawmakers diverge on other aid proposals. Biden wants to increase $300 weekly unemployment insurance payments from the federal government to $400 and extend them through September, while the Republicans want to keep the payments at the current $300 and only through July. Biden has proposed sending most Americans, all but the biggest wage earners, $1,400 checks on top of the $600 checks that were approved by former President Donald Trump in late December. The Republicans are supporting $1,000 checks for lower-income Americans. Blinken Slams Putin for Crackdown on Navalny Supporters
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has said the Biden administration is considering possible action against Russia, a day after police used batons and tasers against protesters demanding the release of jailed opposition politician Alexey Navalny. In an TV interview that aired on Monday, Blinken said he was “deeply disturbed by the violent crackdown.” He also said in the wide-ranging interview that China acted “egregiously” to undermine Hong Kong and warned Iran was months away from the ability to produce the fissile material needed for a nuclear weapon. Regarding China, Blinken said that despite World Health Organization inspectors on the ground in Wuhan, Beijing is “falling far short of the mark” when it comes to allowing experts access to the sites where the coronavirus was discovered. Blinken said the Biden administration would be looking to see whether the U.S. tariffs imposed on Chinese imports by the previous Trump administration were doing more harm to the United States than to their target. He also criticized Chinese actions in Hong Kong, where he said China had acted “egregiously” to undermine its commitments to the semiautonomous island. Under a sweeping national security law criminalizing secession and subversion, pro-democracy demonstrators have been swept up in waves of arrests.
